Birthday wishes...

by Marie Renaud

Well it’s my birthday today so I can reflect on past years and past birthdays!

This picture was taken in September this year, it was in a beautiful apartment I had rented in Paris to meet up with my coaching colleagues and continue in my desire to always learn, expand and evolve…

I recently left the NHS and began on this path to becoming a parenting coach to support parents in their relationship to their baby or child.

The time in Paris 2016 completely reinforced my belief in how important mindful parenting is and how the effects of difficult relationships between parents and children are long lasting and powerful in shaping the individual. Of course all families are to some extent dysfunctional but when parents are able to be more thoughtful, their actions are less likely to stem from unconscious, knee-jerk reactions to events…

My family of origin was no exception and on my 19th birthday, I left Paris with my 2 suitcases and took a train to Victoria station, leaving behind what I thought was an impossible situation with my family, in which from my perspective they did not accept me as I was nor respect my wishes to grow up in the way I wanted to grow up! A very belated adolescence crisis then!

Interestingly that crisis, which I am sure must have been incredibly painful and worrying for my parents who had to wait for a letter from me to get news, led to a real and deep re-connection with them, through letters over the next year which had a big influence on how I then understood the power of emotions in relationships generally but in parent-child relationships in particular, and the importance of being able to express those emotions.
